Playwriting

Read My Mind is a one act play I wrote for a playwriting and directing class during my sophomore year. I later directed and produced the play for our school’s Winterfest festival, where students submit and direct their own original works.

I wanted to create something experimental. The story follows a man and a woman waiting separately for their dates at a restaurant. Neither date arrives, and through overlapping internal monologues, the audience realizes they’re actually interested in each other but too nervous to speak. A humorous waitress provides comic relief and contrast.

I cast the show from students at my school and directed rehearsals over two months, meeting twice a week to refine timing, tone, and staging in our Black Box Theater. My goal was to create a play that was both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Read My Mind was later selected for the Boston Playwrights’ Theater Festival and performed by professional actors under another director’s interpretation. It was incredibly rewarding to see my writing brought to life in a new way.

a collection of poems,
by ellie larsen

I wrote a collection of poems, by ellie larsen during the Young Writers Workshop at Bard College at Simon’s Rock.

Before the program, I didn’t think of myself as someone who enjoyed writing poetry. Once I arrived, I realized how powerful it was at expressing emotion. Many of my poems are inspired by my family and my own life experiences.

My process starts with free writes, almost like diary entries, where I get all my thoughts down and then refine them into something I feel proud to share.

Through this experience, I learned to trust my voice and to focus less on structure and more on creating a feeling that readers can relate to.
